When Icicles Hang by the Wall

It's been a disappointing winter for icicles, especially compared to last year (photos part one, photos part two), when the icicles were so gigantic that they fused together to form a curtain of ice across the deck. In the last few days, however, the icicles on our deck have at least made a decent showing. But with March just around the corner, I'm afraid it's probably too little too late.

New Dream Blog Post

Head on over to my dream blog for my first new entry in almost five months: "ZCMI India." (That's "Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution" India, for my non-Utah readership.)

P.S. - Happy Birthday, Mom!

SST: Doctor Ernie

SESAME STREET TUESDAY

When you're learning how to be a doctor you sometimes need pretend patients to practice on:

My friend Adam works at the University of Michigan department of medical education and over Christmas break he emailed me with a job opportunity. I quote:
The job is to be a "patient" making phone calls to medical students as part of a course preparing them to be surgical residents. In addition to evaluating how they handle your "case," you would also evaluate their communication skills such as directness, clarity, assertiveness, etc.
He said that he thought that I would be a good fit for this particular case because unlike the other more purely clinical cases, this one includes an element of performance. He even had me send his supervisor my stage experience resume rather than my normal job resume, because it takes a great thespian to convincingly portray the emotional life of a patient:

It's a pretty good gig, although I have to admit that the novelty wears off a bit once you've gone through the exact same shtick thirty or so times. Maybe I should occasionally throw in the phrase "coquettish haberdasher" to keep things interesting.

Note: I promised Adam I wouldn't divulge any specifics about the case because there's always the slight chance that a medical student involved in the course could find my blog and have an unfair advantage over his/her peers. You'll just have to guess what my ailment might be.

P.S. If you want to watch the entire Kramer and Mickey story from that episode of Seinfeld, some guy pointed a video camera at his TV screen and put the videos on YouTube (in other words, the quality isn't great): Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6.

Pictures from the Weekend

Plants Need a Little Less Water, Man

Too bad Sesame Street didn't educate me about the dangers of overwatering plants. This is what remains of my old roommate Micah's aloe plant. This poor little guy sat on Micah's desk for years and was constantly in danger of dying due to Micah's neglect. As soon as Micah moved out, I took possession of the plant and moved it out on the deck so it could get more sunlight. Within a few weeks that thing was flourishing and beautiful. However, we had a string of three misty/foggy days in a row in October and I didn't bring the plant inside, and it just devastated it. The aloe tendril thingies were so full of water you could pop them with a pin. I have spent the past few months trying to bring it back to health, but it never recovered from that short span of overwatering. Yesterday I finally admitted to myself that it was too far gone (it had started to grow mold) and I finally threw it away. Sigh.

Muffin Pie

This week I snatched up two graham cracker pie crusts simply because they were super-cheap on manager's special. I, man of no pie experience, hit on the idea of instead filling them with muffin mix, but when I mentioned my idea to some friends before baking it up I met with unexpected skepticism. While the finished product wasn't exactly an unqualified smash that I'll add to my regular rotation, I think it was better than the doubters imagined. It came out a little dry, but served à la mode it's just fine.

Peter's ER Adventure

This morning I awoke at 5:00 a.m. to the sound of pounding on my door. Peter had been sick in the bathroom all night and it bad become so severe that he was throwing up blood, so he called the on-call nurses at University Health Services and they recommended going to the ER. So I grabbed a pillow and a blanket and drove him down to the hospital. They admitted him rather quickly, but he must have been pretty low down on the triage list, so we waited forever. I tried to sleep in my chair but that wasn't working, so I finally sprawled out with my blanket on the cold hard tile and managed to get a bit of sleep when there weren't nurses stepping all over me. They gave Peter an I.V., some anti-nausea medicine, and told him that he should be fine. We got back home about five hours later. All in all it was a lot less dramatic than my last trip to the ER, which is a very good thing.

SST: Lost Boy

SESAME STREET TUESDAY

We've waited patiently for 7 months and tonight we get our reward: the premiere of the sixth and final season of LOST. To commemorate, I present this Sesame Street clip that shares some of the weirdness of this great series. This Yellow Submarine-esque clip starring a Walt-like lost boy used to freak me out as a kid, and even now it's giving me the creeps.

P.S. - Today is also my second blogiversary. Feel free to send me e-cards and whatnot.
